Wow there really are a lot of great poker strategy articles and books out there. Should I really be trying to write about that sort of stuff? Bah, maybe not, but when I have ideas I think I should still make the effort to share them. But from now on with this blog, I'll be trying to keep things more personal and chat more about my own life experience. All the while still covering some of less commonly discussed, yet still important, poker tidbits.
Today, I'll just ask a question: Should you and/or do you drink coffee when you play poker? Should a serious poker player drink coffee everyday?
In a recent poker training video I witnessed what I thought at the time was unthinkable. A serious poker pro telling me that I should avoid coffee. What in the hell? I drink that shit down like it was liquid manna from heaven, every single day! Are you telling me its bad for my game? Could it be bad for my game? I don't know because I've never stopped drinking it.
In fact, I could see how coffee could be negative for a poker player. I mean, when you drink it you get kinda riled up and anxious right? I think calmness is really important in poker, so that can't be the ideal state of mind, but it's hardly the worst. Coffee also heightens your senses and makes you hyper-alert, good things right?
Why coffee is bad for poker players
I know this for sure, coffee causes a crash. This crash happens to me every day around 6 or 7 hours after I drink my morning cuppa joe. Normally I just cool down relax during this crash, and don't think too much of it. But what if I'm in a live poker session and I don't really think I should quit because the game is good? In that case I would be costing myself money by quitting or simply by playing a sluggish game. The crash that comes with caffeine is something I used to overlook, and it's in fact a good reason to try and expel coffee from your routine.
All in all I think this issue is about moderation or balance. If you drink a little cup of coffee every morning, that'll hardly make or break you poker career, LOL. But if you're like me and suck down two pints of the good stuff every single time you sit down at the table, it might be worth re-examining your habits. I'm not sure I want to even considering giving up on my drug of choice but I will state the following loud and clear to the poker reading public: I, Salvatore, do solemnly swear to cut down on my consumption of nature's sweet sweet nectar of the bean of life and human salvation, especially before and during poker time. I also pledge to write a follow up to this in a few weeks. CHEERS!

Thus I am fully with you on this one. Do you know any web based anonym coffee addicts group :)?
Cheers,
